36 acre homestead on Lake Cypress Springs.
Welcome to Sandy Pastures, a labor of love born from our deep appreciation for permaculture and sustainable living. This is where we've nurtured thriving pastures, heritage livestock, and a rich tapestry of nature on our custom-built homestead. Explore our cherished oasis of life and harmony; And maybe even call it your own.
Our story:
In the year 2015, a newfound fascination with permaculture—a novel approach to land and farm management—captured my imagination. Over the subsequent years, my intrigue only deepened, ultimately leading my husband and me to embark on an ambitious endeavor: constructing a homestead from the ground up, firmly rooted in the principles of permaculture philosophy.
This journey was made possible by our earlier investment in land on the shores of Lake Cypress Springs, a place that would become the canvas for our sustainability vision. The odyssey commenced with the construction of fences, barns, water wells, and gardens, shaping our dream into a reality.
We christened our fledgling farm 'Sandy Pastures,' an apt name considering the vastness of sandy pastures and woodlands that greeted us in the beginning.
Our voyage into self-sufficiency began with the humble acquisition of baby chicks, leading us on a path to raising our first laying hens. Soon, goats joined our farmstead, serving as both grazers and underbrush-clearing companions. A complete farm, of course, wouldn't be without the presence of cattle and pigs. With careful consideration, we chose heritage breeds—American Guinea Hogs and Pineywoods cattle—and, in the true Texan spirit, welcomed longhorn cattle to our fold, including the radiant longhorn named Stella.
In recent years, our focus has shifted towards nurturing the soil and enriching the farm's biodiversity. We've cultivated numerous tree varieties and flowering plants, not only to sustain our beloved honeybees with nectar but also to bestow natural beauty upon our cherished homestead.
All structures on our homestead, meticulously designed and crafted, boast an age of less than six years, custom-built by skilled steel contractors. Our primary dwelling and guest house were brought to life by a local home builder, while a generously sized workshop (spanning 2800 square feet) features an air-conditioned office and a convenient half bath.
Our journey into permaculture and homesteading has been a labor of love, a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainability and harmony with the land. Although we will fondly remember Sandy Pastures, it is time for us to take the next step in our lives, moving closer to our elderly family members while seeking new horizons.
